SUMMARY
SW Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park extends itself along the Portuguese coast and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. This SW landscape is 300 million years old and it is one of the most preserved landscapes all over Europe; human intervention has been less visible throughout its history. Once submerged (about 2 million years ago), this is a vast area with many different coastal habitats and countless beaches and cliffs. Our daily tours include going to the wonderful beaches of this Natural Park and taking a swim in the clear, blue sea. Cliffs are steep, almost 100m high and right above the ocean. Countless rocks and isolated islets complete this beautiful and unique scenery. You will see the islet of Pessegueiro, a short distance out to sea, which has archaeological findings that date back to the Iron Age and Roman times. This area boasts a diversity of rare botanical species, with very interesting flora and a variety of maritime birds that nest here. S. Vicente Cape is a passing area for thousands of birds of prey. The tour also goes to Sagres, which is the south-westernmost point in continental Europe, the place from where our brave forefathers sailed on their caravels seeking new peoples and continents. Finally, you will visit some of the beaches of our famous Algarve including the cosmopolitan city of Lagos. This is one of the oldest towns in Algarve. We can still see evidence of the wall surrounding the town for protection. Lagos also has an old fort and its former Slave Market is now an art gallery.

This PortugalBike Tour is different from all the others because we will be based at the top of the Natural Park of Serra da Estrela. Each day we will leave to discover a different slope of the hill. You will have the opportunity to admire amazing views from the top of the hill and you’ll have the thrill of your life riding down trails of dense and lush vegetation! Don’t worry: you won’t have to climb back uphill. At the end of each day, the mini-van will be waiting to take us back to the hotel at the top of the hill. You will see evidence of ancient history – a medieval castle, a Roman road – and you can refresh yourself in the crystalline waters of the fluvial swimming-pools. You will taste the world-famous Queijo da Serra (cheese) that is still traditionally manufactured and you can still count more than one hundred different handicraft activities, such as pottery, wooden works, weaving, tapestry, embroidery, basketry, etc. The Natural Park of Serra da Estrela is the largest protected area in Portugal and it occupies a surface of about 1000 km2. It corresponds to the hill-country of Serra da Estrela that is essentially granite with some schist outcrops. The area of the Natural Park includes the main hydrographical springs of Portugal (Mondego, Zezere, Alva), the main vestiges of ancient glaciers and the highest peak in continental Portugal – Torre is almost 2000 metres high. Due to its geographic isolation, this region is today the most distinct region of Portugal. As a result, we see a part of old Portugal with its unspoiled and immensely varied scenery and traditional cuisine.

ABOUT PORTUGALBIKE:

Since 1995 we have been organizing Guided Bicycle Tours in Portugal under the name of BTTour. We have organized more than 200 Bicycle Tours and more than 8000 people have ridden with us.
In 2003 we decided to offer something else – to show our beautiful country to those who live beyond our borders. We created PortugalBike to share with people all over the world some of the most unique biking experiences. In 2006 we were Finalists in the PUBLITURIS Travel Trade & Hotel Guide 2005 Awards for the «Best Company of Active and Animation Tourism in Portugal» .

Being a Portuguese-owned Company, we know our country better than anybody else and we want to expose people to places and curiosities about Portugal that only a Portuguese knows! Our target is that you visit Portugal …riding a bicycle! On PortugalBike Tours you have the opportunity to visit our historical, cultural and landscape heritage in our Natural Parks, enjoy the sun and the beaches, and at the end of the day you can recover your strength with an exquisite dinner. You can taste our famous wines, amazing cheeses and lovely desserts, and sample typical dishes of each region of Portugal.

You will rest in cozy and charming accommodations. We always choose 4-star quality hotels whenever possible in each region or Tourism in the Country. Our accommodations are always the best offer of each region.

WHAT KIND OF TOURS DO WE OFFER?

There are three types of PortugalBike Tours, depending on the type of bicycle you use during your one-week programme:

1) Road Bike Tours are on asphalt roads (100%). We always try to avoid roads with a lot of traffic, preferring secondary roads. On these tours, you ride more km/day than on a Hybrid Bike Tour. These tours can be Guided or Self-Guided. You use a Road Bike (700x23 wheels with carbon frame). You can also opt for a Hybrid Bike, if you prefer (700x38 wheels with a little front suspension). Participants are usually 30-50 years old.

2) Hybrid Bike Tours are mainly on asphalt/tarmac (more than 75%) with some off-road rolling trails. Usually the tours are a little bit longer than the Mountain Bike version tours. It is the best and most relaxing way to know a country by bicycle while also having fun. These tours can be Guided or Self-Guided. You use a Hybrid Bike (700x38 wheels with a little front suspension). Participants are usually 40-60 years old.

3) Mountain Bike Tours are mainly on off-road rough trails (more than 75%), sometimes technical, with very little asphalt/tarmac. You need some biking skills and you need to be in good shape. Usually, these tours are a little bit shorter than the Hybrid Bike tours. It is the best way to know a country and feel the challenge of nature. These tours are always Guided (ask us for self-guided). You use a Mountain Bike (26x2.1 wheels with front suspension and hydraulic disc brakes). Participants are usually 20-40 years old.

There are 2 Classes of PortugalBike Tours, depending on what you will see during your one-week programme:

1) HISTORIC TOURS: on these bicycle programmes you will have the opportunity of learning more about the heritage of Portugal, i.e. castles, fortresses, palaces, convents, and you will have a closer contact with our History and our Culture.

2) LANDSCAPE TOURS: on these bicycle programmes you will have the opportunity of admiring our vast landscapes along the coast, breathing the fresh air from the ocean or the mountains, relaxing on the beaches or just feeling in contact with Nature and appreciate the Universe.

DIFFICULTY LEVELS:

Each PortugalBike Tour is classified according to its difficulty level, from 1 to 5. Level 1 is the easiest and level 5 is the most difficult.

- Levels 1 and 2 are for Beginners (You are not in good shape)
- Level 3 is for Intermediate Bikers (You must be in good shape)
- Level 4 is for Advanced Bikers (You are fit and in good shape)
- Level 5 is for Expert Bikers (You are in very good shape! You are a winner!)

Besides the classification for overall difficulty level of each PortugalBike Tour, each day is also classified from 1 to 5. When the trails are difficult, we ride less km/day and when the trails are easy, we ride more km/day. Please note that the purpose of PortugalBike Tours is not to train, but only to enjoy your bicycle, nature and environment. ...You are on vacations!

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT ON A PORTUGALBIKE TOUR?

PortugalBike Tours are designed so that we begin at a certain point and we end elsewhere. You do not start and end at the same place. We think that is the best way to discover Portugal ...riding a bicycle! Read the specific information about each ride to learn more details.

PortugalBike Tours can be Guided (with a Guide) or Self-Guided (with a GPS device with all tracks recorded). The big difference between the prices for Guided and Self-Guided Tours is that the Self-Guided Tours do not include dinners, picnics, energy bars and water during the day. There is always a backup car to provide any assistance you may need.

PortugalBike Tours have a maximum of 16 participants, and a minimum of two. Larger groups are also possible upon request and according to our availability. Our Bike Tours are prepared for one week (7 days / Saturday to Friday).

The dates of PortugalBike Tours are according to our calendar, or on request, according to our availability. The prices below are for the scheduled PortugalBike Tours. However, if you wish a different date, ask us for prices and availability.

SUMMARY
This PortugalBike Tour begins in Fatima, a Catholic sanctuary located not far from Lisbon and which several times visited by Pope John Paul II. Then you will ride towards the coast to Nazare, the most typical beach in Portugal. This is a place full of old traditions and today we can still see fishermen drying fish under the sun as they did in the past. This is also a wonderful place to refresh ourselves in the blue waters or take a walk along the golden sand. You will ride along the sea admiring the beautiful view and you will ride along agrarian fields with different crops and different colours. One of the highlights of this tour is the Medieval Town of Obidos. Originally a Roman village, it was taken from the Moors in 1148. Its castle is classified as a national monument and it is a perfect example of a medieval fortress. This is a “village-museum”, perfectly preserved and walled by its high walls which perpetuate its medieval character. Another interesting point of this tour is the Peniche Peninsula, a place of fishing traditions and from where you can admire one of the largest fishing and diving sanctuaries – the Wild Islet of Berlenga, also known as Berlenga Natural Reserve. This is a wonderful place where you will go by boat, leaving your bicycles on the other side, and take a swim in the clear waters on the coast of this islet, near S. Joao Batista fortress. This very ancient and small fortress defended our coast from the pirate’s attacks that came from the sea, between the 16th century and the 19th century.

»»»» Thank you for the best vacation ever. I can honestly say it was custom made for me!! (...) «Along the Silver Coast» tour have shown me that Portugal is a diverse country. I feel like I saw it all in 7 days, without any travel stress. (...) PortugalBike is a complete destination management company. I am so impressed with your company and I am telling everyone; you were «tour guides», personal trainers, translators, concierge, taxi, caterers, historians, friends and professional business operators. PortugalBike takes care of everything, all you need to do is ride and enjoy!! Great home made lunches, excellent local restaurants, transportation and translation services you will be thrilled with your vacation. The time I spent off the bicycle was as interesting and diverse as during the ride. PortugalBike is priceless and you (Jose & Cristina) are a pleasure. Spending a week with 2 total strangers and trusting their judgement was a concern of mine before selecting my trip. I recommend you both on your character and integrity; you are both excellent people (personally and as business owners). I HIGHLY recommend this trip to everyone and anyone who has a pulse and a desire to see a beautiful country. By bike, boat, foot, land, sea and van, we covered ocean coast, cliffs, beach, islands, caves 60m under, castles, desert, farms, countryside villages, vacation hot spots, nature preserves and island, fancy hotels, manor houses, sheep herds and my favourite - Obidos, the city inside the castle walls, it's amazing. Thank you again for everything!

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS
1. The Natural Park of SW Alentejo and Vicentine Coast
2. The most preserved coast all over Europe
3. Tasty fresh fish of the Atlantic Coast
4. Vast fields of vegetable crops
5. The beautiful cliffs of Vicentine Coast

9. The gorgeous beaches and beautiful coast of the Algarve region
10. Lagos - the cosmopolitan and the oldest town in the Algarve

This area boasts a diversity of rare botanical species, with very interesting flora and a variety of maritime birds that nest here. Riding along the trails of these cliffs that belong to this Natural Park, admiring the unique views of the blue ocean and feel the fresh wind in your face is one of the most fantastic feelings that any person can have. In the extreme south point of this tour you will find S. Vicente Cape. This is the south-westernmost point in continental Europe and a passing area for thousands of birds of prey. The tour also goes to Sagres, which is the place from where our brave forefathers sailed on their caravels seeking new peoples and continents.

»»»» Our bike tour, the Beautiful Alentejo Beaches, was outstanding, and the second we arrived our tour guides informative demeanor made this trip very comfortable. Beginning with port wine and raspberry cake at reception we immediately hit it off with our riding mates. The charming hotels with champagne breakfast started every day off on the right track. On each days ride our guides encompassing insights of Portuguese culture bound with historical references absorbed our spirit. The lunch stops with fresh farmers cheese and fruits ensured us that one more hill wasn't so bad and the afternoon beer stops motivated everyone of us to never stop smiling. Each nights hotel welcomed the end of a days ride as the beginning of a wonderful evening. The restaurants were a delightful mix of local food, wine and culture including a private tour of a port wine cellar. Starting out each day without expectations Jose and Christina exceeded them all. We would love to do this trip again. Thank You Very Much.

»»»» First and foremost, let me thank you once again for a wonderful vacation along The Beautiful Alentejo Beaches. As you are aware, I have traveled with several bicycle tour companies throughout Europe. I found Portugal Bike to exceed the more expensive companies in personality, equipment, and feel for the local culture. The accommodations and food matched that of the more expensive tours. In general, Portugal was a beautiful country with some of the friendliest people I have met throughout Europe. I will enthusiastically recommend both this trip and your company.

»»»» Thank you again for a wonderful adventure! You two did everything possible to make the bike tour a terrific experience and you have spoiled me. I have taken several other bike tours and now I know just what a really excellent tour should be like. The bikes, van, accommodations (I never expected the 4 star hotels), food, and all your extra services were first class. The scenery on the trip with the cliffs, beaches, long coastal views, and villages in a natural park setting was truly memorable. I was very comfortable and happy throughout the tour. I hope to return soon to join you on another tour. I am afraid that another company would disappoint me.

SUMMARY
Alentejo is a scarcely populated region with open horizons, where the rhythm of life follows the idle sound of regional songs. It is perfect for riding a bicycle and experiencing an unforgettable adventure. This is a land of unimaginable heritage. The tour will take you along the remarkable traces of ancient cultures: dolmens and cromlechs, Roman and Arab vestiges mingling with the most recent signs of Christianity of which the numerous medieval castles are but one example. You will ride alongside vast wheat-fields and vineyards where intense green and golden colours are the main characteristic of the plains in Alentejo. One of the most typical sights in this region is a vast field with some cork trees here and there and the herds (sometimes sheep, sometimes pigs or cows) usually enjoying the shade of the trees. The villages with their whitewashed one-floor houses are a picturesque landscape in Alentejo. You will have the opportunity to visit Evora, which is classified as World Heritage by UNESCO, and some other beautiful villages, such as Estremoz, Vila Vicosa and Monsaraz. The people here are very proud of their heritage and they preserve the ancient buildings and also the ancient practices. This is a region that has a very rich handicraft tradition – pottery, embroideries, hand-painted furniture, wrought-iron works, etc. The local gastronomy is varied and quite tasty and perfectly matches the famous local wines. This is a tour where the quietness and silence of the endless landscapes invite us to share nature in a rural environment and socialize with the people that live and work there. This is a spectacular tour characterized by moderate physical and technical difficulty and it takes us to the most ancient vestiges of our history and heritage.

»»»» Our cycling trip with you was the highlight of our holiday!!! This was our first cycling trip in another country and we will definitely do it again. I would like to thank you again for such a wonderful trip. The route was very interesting with a lot of variety in the itinerary. Jose has put a lot of thought and time into discovering and planning it. I particularly enjoyed the off road areas — through farmers lands. The fun and challenge off rolling hills, uneven ground and not knowing what was around the next corner. I loved the bike I was riding, and in fact my own bike without disc brakes seems very inferior now. Not only was the route varied and interesting, but the choice of accommodations was as well. Each place had its own unique charm, and the meals were superb. We felt very pampered at the end of the day (and after 50 kms I was tired!!). I also enjoyed the opportunity to just chat, and learn about your interesting country --- its politics, its history -- both past and present. Cristina and Jose, you are wonderful hosts and new friends. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with you and I will be raving about this holiday with all my cycling friends. I wish you much success in your business.

»»»» We really felt like saw the authentic Portugal. Going through the cork forests, seeing the marble quarry, and staying in the small towns gave us a unique experience for the true countryside. We loved the history of Evora, Terena and all the places in-between. It was great to enjoy the local foods and we enjoyed learning and tasting the true "Port". Your hospitality and care and attention to our needs was excellent! Thank you so much for this amazing experience.

SUMMARY
This Tour takes place in the Natural Park of Serra da Estrela. Due to its demographic isolation, this region is today the most distinct region of Portugal. Here we find a part of an ancient Portugal with its unspoiled and immensely varied scenery and traditional cuisine.
Here is the highest place in Continental Portugal (± 2000m) and your accommodation place is very close to that point. Every day you will ride down the mountain heading to a different direction and discovering different aspects of this amazing landscape.
You will ride along the Glacier Valley of Zezere River with its dense vegetation and you will have the opportunity of swimming in the refreshing limpid waters of the rivers.
This Tour is also full of History and you will visit some charming small towns and villages that still maintain their ancient characteristics, the castles, the narrow roads, the small houses. You will visit Belmonte and see the castle, the cobblestone roads and the synagogue. Here there is a very ancient Jewish community (there are records dated from 1297) that was maintained in secrecy over the centuries thus surviving in spite of the persecutions that this people suffered all over Europe. You will visit Linhares, its castle and the narrow cobblestone roads. You will visit the very well-preserved historic village of Sortelha and the unique schist village of Piodao with its small black houses built on the slope. A walk through these historic villages is like entering a live museum where the simplest traditions survive in the hands of their people, in their music, in their handicraft or, simply, in their natural way of saying Hello to those who pass by…

TESTIMONIALS
»»»» I would like to thank Jose and Cristina for operating a "first class" bike tour. I truly enjoyed the variety of scenery throughout the small villages . The road bikes that were provided were of excellent standard which helped in the challenging experience on each hill travelled!! I would highly recommend the guided tour since Jose provides valuable insight on the Portuguese landscapes that are visited. Cristina also provides superior service with the support van. From our picnic lunches, to our dinner's out in the various towns, everything was well taken care. We especially enjoyed the wonderful meals, which were accompanied with a well deserved glass of red wine in the evening to celebrate our riding accomplishments. I truly enjoyed the experience, and I definitely plan to come again in 2010!

»»»» I had the most fabulous bike adventure trip with the Portugal Bike tour company. I have participated in other adventure holidays in the past but this was my favourite and definitely exceeded my expectations. The hotels that we stayed at were amazing, all very quaint, interesting and one night we even stayed in castle! The food, and I love to eat; complete breakfasts to begin or day, picnic lunches that were nutritious and represented local foods and cheeses and finally our dinners – they were so wonderful (all of them) complete with an excellent choice of wine selected by Jose (who is very knowledgeable about the local wines). Another key factor was I always felt in good hands in a foreign country ...Safety first; the route was well planned to consider traffic volumes and road conditions, top of line equipment and very knowledgeable guides. I would highly recommend this bike tour to anybody interested in truly seeing this beautiful country; from the cork trees, vineyards, storks, black pigs, hilly terrain to the fabulous medieval towns we visited. I can’t wait to come back and do the Algarve bike trip. Thanks so much Jose and Cristina for leaving me with such a memorable experience, you run a top class tour!

SUMMARY
Starting in Sesimbra, you will ride to a winery where you will learn about the famous Moscatel wine and also taste it. Then you will enter one of the lushest areas south of Lisbon – the Natural Park of Arrabida. On one side of the park, you’ll admire beautiful Mediterranean landscapes and at the other side, the gorgeous coast with accessible beaches where the fine sand and clear sea waters provide a strong contrast of unusual colours. You will ride along the coast to Setubal and after crossing the Sado river, you’ll reach Troia and then Sines where the Natural Park of SW Alentejo and Vicentine Coast begins. It extends itself along the Portuguese coast and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. This SW landscape is 300 million years old and it is one of the most preserved landscapes all over Europe; human intervention is less visible throughout the area’s long history. Once submerged (about 2 million years ago), this is a vast area with many different coastal habitats and countless beaches and cliffs. Daily tours include going to the wonderful beaches of this Natural Park and taking a swim in the limpid and clear sea. Numerous cliffs and isolated islets complete this beautiful and unique scenery. This area boasts a diversity of rare botanical species, with very interesting flora and a variety of maritime birds that nest here. S. Vicente Cape is a passing area for thousands of birds of prey. This tour also goes to Sagres, which is the south-westernmost point in continental Europe, the place from where our brave forefathers sailed on their caravels seeking new peoples and continents. Finally, you have the opportunity to visit some of the beaches of our famous Algarve and the cosmopolitan city of Lagos. This is one of the oldest towns in the Algarve. You can still see evidence of the wall surrounding the town for protection.

TESTIMONIALS
»»»» My experiences with PortugalBike left me behind with a big concern: Where on earth can I experience a cycling trip as excellent as in Portugal? I guess that nowhere I will experience such a warm and generous hospitality, top notch material, professional guidance, delicious food and wine, bright sunshine and a refreshing sea breeze as on the way to the Portuguese Algarve. There is only one option left to me: I definitely have to return next year for another Portuguese cycling holidays with PortugalBike!

Come with us and discover a new world of sensations and visual pleasures blowing in the wind!!For the majority of our passengers this will be their first balloon flight and we hope to deal with all your initial doubts: It is an active excursion which lasts a whole morning, beginning in the early morning (from 7.00a.m. in summer and from 9.00a.m. in winter) so as to avoid the maximum effects of the sun's heating of the atmosphere. It consists of a flight of more than an hour, followed by a typical lunch in one of the farmhouses which are characteristic of the area. Finally, passengers receive a Diploma, signed by the pilot, certifying their participation in the flight.A balloon flight is the safest means of flying and all necessary precautions are taken to ensure that safety is preserved. The flights are only undertaken when meteorological and atmospheric conditions, and forecasts, are good.Experience: our company was the first to be set up in Spain specifically to offer passenger flights, eight years ago. All of them possess valid credentials issued by the Dirección General de Aviación Civil (Spanish Civil Aviation Department), and their Pilot's Licence. Insurance: we have policies covering Civil Responsibility and Passenger safety.Adventure: although travel agencies normally present our products as an adventure sport or activity, we take all possible precautions in order to ensure the risks are effectively nil.
