Typical Day

On a self guided tour, the schedule is up to you, sleep in and catch a late morning coffee and pastry at one of the local cafes, or try to beat the sunrise to your next town and spend the day lounging on the beach, its really at your pace, that is what has made these tours so popular!Our Essence of the Coast© Costa Azul, and Castles & Vines© Alentejo tours start around 8-9 am just after a healthy and substantial fresh fruit, yogurt and muesli, cereals, ham & cheese, you-name-it buffet style breakfast. We offer luggage storage in our secure Costa Azul facilities, and the price is included in your tour, Guided or Self-Guided. Our guide will then brief you on the day's route, as well as clue you in to any key features along the route which are not to be missed. The SAG (Support And Gear) vehicle will always be with us on the ride, and our guides are prepared for those first aid situations or first aid bicycle situations, should they arise. Lunches will catered picnic style, relaxed along the way to keep things light, or our treat at a local fishermans shanty or European deli style care, and dinner will be at a local restaurant later in the evening. Our SAG vehicle is always supplied with plenty of water and refreshments to keep you hydrated and pedalling, so you need only to put your head up, and head down the road, enjoying the wind at your back! Upon arrival at each destination, you'll have time to explore on your own, or just relax in the hotel accommodations or under the shade of a tree or on the beach. There are usually activities planned with our partners in the areas, so when available we will guide you in the direction of these to help fill your afternoon. Typical activites (depending upon route and availability) include dolphin cruises, sport fishing, coastal cruises, surf lessons, jeep tours, or maybe the local festivals and artisans, to name only a few. When you book your guided or self guided tour, we can help you plan your activites depending upon what is happening at that time of year. We'll gather in the evening for our group dinners, included with your tour package. Here you can sample the fresh seafood or delicious dishes of the interior Portugal, a much heartier take on the gastronomy. Each meal will include choices of red or white (or green) wine, and all the trimmings making them a truly Portuguese feast with your new friends!

Age range, type of group

Generally we like to welcome anyone on our tours, as long as they are capable of handling 3-5 hours of riding on a bicycle per day by yourself. We encourage couples to spend their honeymoons riding together down the coast on a self-guided tour for those romantic beach sunsets, and we like to have larger groups come for our Corporate Team Builders rides, as they are a great way to spend time outside of the office! For singles, what better way to meet people from all over the world than to spend a week riding a bike through Portugal with them? We certainly can't think of one...Our guidelines for children are as follows: Our bicycles are Trek hybrid style and do not accommodate child carriers. If you bring a child that cannot operate an adult sized bicycle, you must bring your own bicycle with the capability of transporting your child. Bicycles outside of our own fleet should be approved by our office before they can be accepted. Children over the age of 12-13 (typically) using a bike on their own,will be charged the basic per person rate. We do like to remain flexible however, and will normally take things on a case by case basis. Please contact us if you have any further questions on this matter.

Sleeping and meals

All your accommodations during the tour are part of the package price. We stay in Castles, renaissance mansions, and delightful traditional country Portuguese villas along the Costa Azul and in the Alentejo and rooms are priced on same-sex double room arrangements. For singles supplements email us asap as they are subject to limited availability. Our partnership with the luxurious and historical 4-5 star pousadas gives our guests the opportunity to relax and unwind in the chambers of former Kings and Queens! Their service is excellent and we wouldn't think of staying anywhere else. To us, we feel that being as loyal to the Portuguese way of life, both past and present, helps our guests in their submergence into the culture. You'll leave here with a sense that you gained a home away from home, given the good natured hospitality of the Portuguese and their laid back way of life. On a self-guided tour, we can customize your route and further, where you'll stay. All the options mentioned above are available to Self-Guided riders, plus we have options where you can use a series of campgrounds along the coast as an alternative. Restrictions

No pets of any kind are allowed on our routes. There is also no smoking allowed in any Bluecoastbikes vehicle or office location. Please see our notes above regarding children. Our insurance will cover you while on our tours for the type of activity that we offer, however it is highly advised for anyone to obtain their own form of travel insurance before travelling. Beyond this, we welcome any person of any gender, race, nationality or other to join us on the coast for a true cultural adventure!
