Our County Name and the Hocking River
Hocking County was named from a shortened version of the Hockhocking River. Hockhocking, in the Delaware tongue, signifies a bottle. In Shawnee, Wea-tha-Kagh-Qua-sepe, meant bottle river. The Hockhocking River had a waterfall of nearly 20 feet located about 6 or 7 miles northwest of Lancaster. Above the falls, the creek was very narrow and straight, forming the "bottle" neck. At the falls the riverbed spread out.


The Hocking enters the county from Good Hope Township in the northwest and then flows southwest, touches Marion Township, continues through Falls and Green Townships, and exits the county through northwestern Starr Township. The river is then in Athens County.

Community strengths include well-maintained municipal infrastructure with community parks and green space. There is an ongoing commitment to enhance ecological and environmental initiatives at local and regional levels.

Heritage homes predominate in the community and our new sub division provides an unobstructed view of the Saskatchewan prairie.

The community's "Keep Gravelbourg Beautiful" and "Touch of Europe" committees are busy with projects to enhance the entire community with new parks, floral landscapes, street and building improvements.

Today's Gravelbourg is a focal point for the surrounding prairie region. The town is an important regional service center, home to an integrated business sector including two newspapers, community radio and over 100 businesses spanning the retail, manufacturing and service sectors. The community retains a health, education and spirituality orientation with a regional hospital, three physicians and several complementary health practitioners.

Gravelbourg has multiple educational institutions to serve the needs of the community and surrounding area.

Bingo – Every Tuesday evening at 7:00p.m.

Winter Festival – Held on the 3rd Weekend in March. This is a fun packed weekend including street hockey, parade, pancake breakfast, Irish stew supper, dance, and many different events.

Annual Fall Supper – Held on the 1st Saturday in November.

Wildlife Annual Supper – Held the 1st Saturday in February

Facilities include fresh water, electricity, broadband internet, cable TV, shower and laundry, grey and black water discharge and refuse disposal. 24 hour CCTV and night security staff are also in operation.

Ashore, the marina village is home to the Victory Bar & Grill, run by Uli Kuhn (one of the island’s premier restaurateurs), as well as a sail-maker, boat maintenance and provisioning services, and shops for leisurewear and crafts.

Trained and professional marina staff are on hand to make sure both visitors and resident yacht owners enjoy their time to the full, whether afloat or ashore.
