New Zealand Hiking & Trekking - New Zealand Alpine Trekking

New Zealand Alpine Trekking

South Island: Otago: Lake Tekapo, New Zealand Hiking & Trekking

Climb high on these 3-day alpine treks. The Ball Pass Crossing gives spectacular views of New Zealand's highest mountains. The Tekapo Trek takes you into the highlands of the Mackenzie Basin with panoramas over Lake Tekapo and the Southern Alps....

TEKAPO TREK: Moderate hiking: Climb high above Lake Tekapo to a private mountain hut, and climb a 2070m peak. Take in the grand views of the Southern Alps and enjoy the solitude of the high country.

BALL PASS TREK: Challenging trekking: Climb 850m from the Tasman Glacier to the private Caroline Hut, opposite the awesome Caroline Ice Face of Aoraki Mount Cook. Learn how to use crampons and ice-axe and climb an easy peak. Cross a small glacier and Ball Pass then descend to Mount Cook Village via the lush Hooker Valley. Previous hiking and backpacking experience essential.

TEKAPO TREK: Day 1: Start: 10am at Alpine Recreation's office, 30 Murray Place Lake Tekapo. From Lake Tekapo township we drive along the lakeshore to a typical high country sheep station. Three hours' hike with a climb of 430m/1400ft brings us to the cosy Rex Simpson Hut, at 1280m/4200ft. The only sounds to be heard are the skylarks singing, or the chirp of an occasional pippit. This peacefulness is one of the first powerful impressions, giving a real sense of isolation and remoteness. The views over Lake Tekapo are expansive. Evening entertainment regularly comes in the form of an inspiring sunset behind the alps and/or spectacularly clear displays of our Southern Hemisphere stars.

Day 2: We trek along a 6 kilometre-long ridge-top, nicknamed "Snake Ridge", that was formed by ice-age glaciation, and ascend Beuzenberg Peak (2073m/6800ft). The terrain is untracked with a moderate gradient. As we hike higher the splendour of the Southern Alps unfolds with the East Face of Mount Cook dominating the skyline. Walk back down to Rex Simpson Hut to be well fed and entertained by your guide. 6-8 hours walking.

South Island: Otago: Lake Wanaka, New Zealand Hiking & Trekking

Remote and wild mountain routes in the heart of New Zealand's South Island. For experienced trekkers who want to see go beyond the tourist trail....

We run remote wilderness trips from 4 to 8 days long.No crowded huts and we rarely see other parties. We stay at pre-placed camp sites which means you only carry a light pack. All you need is appropriate clothing, a good pair of walking shoes or hiking boots and a spirit of adventure. You will welcome the comfort of our fantastic home away from home. Our astonishing food is only outdone by the mountain scenery. What makes Wild Walks different? Quality not quantity1. Small trips of 5 clients max.If your definition of a small group is hiking with 12 people, you probably don't want what Wild Walks offers. Most of the areas we go to would be impossible to visit in groups 12 or more. We don't run our trips based on how many people can fit in a bus or minivan. Our groups are based on how many people we can safely take to a remote area with the least impact. 2. Professional mountain guides. And that is all we do. We are not transport operators who take you on a whirlwind tour of the South Island. We provide discerning clients with an intimate wilderness experience. 3. The best guides. Our guides are paid well, live here, and have intimate knowledge of the area. They enjoy what they are doing and strive to share that passion with you. Most importantly, everyone of them is a whole lot of fun to be in the hills with.4. 20 years experience This allows us to take you where others can't. There is no such thing as adventure without risk. Wild Walks are experts at managing that risk so you can enjoy this unique and challenging part of the world.5. We sweat the details. What ever your needs are, we go the extra distance to make sure your trip with us is perfect. We run the best climbing and trekking trips we possibly can, every time.
